Sarah Essen is a police officer who aided Lieutenant James Gordon in the Batman manhunt. However, they became romantically involved. Gordon broke off the relationsip after confessing the affair to his wife, Barbara. Essen transferred to New York City. At some point, after Gordon was divorced, Essen returned to Gotham and married him. She even convinced Gordon to stop smoking. Whenever he had to make a choice as Commissioner, Gordon always thought of her and knew he was doing the right thing.
