The Coldbringer is a nuclear warhead designed to cause maximum damage to the environment. It was designed by the Soviet Union to induce the environmental effects of a full-scale nuclear war. The electromagnetic pulse generated would cause a nation-wide black out of all electronic equipment and cause severe disruption in weather patterns, such as thrusting millions of tons of soot into the stratosphere and creating a black cloud that blotted out the Sun. In the aftermath of the Corto Maltese conflict, the Soviets fired a Coldbringer at the nation. Superman redirected the nuke but it still went off and plunged the United States of America into chaos. Superman was severely weakened by the blast and reduced to a gaunt-like state. A week later, the cloud of ash was still blanketing the United States and electricity was finally coming back online in parts of the country.
