John Marlowe is a brilliant, young scientist based in Gotham City. Although, he often attends exhibits at the Gotham Museum of Art, Marlowe is introverted and prefers to stay in his 77 level penthouse and work on scientific experiments. As part of the young rich elite, he became good friends with Bruce Wayne.
While conducting experiments in quantum theory for the government, Marlowe made an grand breakthrough in quantum field research, the quantex. The device could charge a body's quantum particles and create energy duplicates. He then used a duplicate as his lab partner. However, Marlowe failed to notice that duration allowed a duplicate to develop free will. The duplicate imprisoned the original Marlowe and took over his life. Some time later, Marlowe was freed by Robin. He quickly armed the hero with his prototype quantex to help defeat the duplicate. After the ordeal, he donated his duplicated art collection to the museum and struck up a romance with its curator, Clea.
