Yelena Kleimenoff, with her family, defected from the Soviet Union and settled down in Gotham City. Kleimenoff's intelligence matured and she became a contestant on Think, Thank, Thunk. She was the latest challenger to Artie Brown's 12 week record and became the champion after Brown was ousted. Kleimenoff went on to become a world famous chess champion. During a bout, she was kidnapped by the Cluemaster's henchmen and subjected to his game show. She and the Cluemaster's other targets were rescued by the Batman.
