Jake is a student athlete who dorms at Gotham University. His roomate was David, leader of the Trio. The two often clashed due to being polar opposites of each other in terms of personality and status. Jake often refused David entry to their dorm room during parties he hosted. After slighting David for the last time, the Trio attacked Jake while he was using the Gotham Universoty Gymnasium's swimming pool.
After being exposed to Langstrom's mutagen, Jake turned into a gorilla and rampaged through campus. After the effects wore off, Jake spent some time recovering at the local hospital. When David was not concerned at all, Barbara Gordon began to suspect he and his two friends may have been responsible as the Terrible Trio.
