Detective Tankenson is a member of the Gotham Police Department. He quickly built up an odd reputation of socially distancing himself from others, always driving his partners, wearing sunglasses at night, and talking in third person. Through all the bravado, Tankenson is a reckless officer and routinely rushes headfirst into a crime scene without a second thought. While dreaming of a career in the Secret Service, Tankenson cares for his elderly grandmother.
On one occassion, he was assigned to be Detective Yin's new partner only to become a target of the Joker. With his pirated TV signal, the Joker propped up a spoof of Tankenson called Detective Shades and lured him into an ambush. After the ordeal, Tankenson requested a transfer to a desk job to recover. Months later, Tankenson was assigned to protect Bruce Wayne by Commissioner Gordon when his life was threatened by Cosmo Krank.
