Police officer James Gordon decided to transfer from Chicago to Gotham City with his wife Barbara and child. Gordon quickly became infamous for being an honest cop in an otherwise corrupt department. During the night of the murders of Dr. and Mrs. Wayne, he consoled Bruce Wayne. Gordon was steadily promoted within Gotham Police over the years. After getting a divorce, Gordon retained custody of his daughter, Barbara. Although she wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement, Gordon pushed her to try gymnastics instead. He didn't want her to live the life he did. He wanted her to have something better, as does any parent.
Eventually, as the tensions between criminal psychopaths came to a head, Gordon stepped in and began to take command of investigations and became the public liaison. He was wary of letting a vigilante loose in Gotham City but saw that the Batman served as an important means to an end that he couldn't accomplish. After setting up a Batsignal on the rooftop of Gotham Police headquarters, Gordon set up an alliance with the Batman on the grounds that he would help make the city a safe place for his daughter to grow up in. Over the years, the alliance continued and Gordon found himself in the action much too often. He was a favorite target of Poison Ivy, formerly Pam Isley, and commanded the police against the Joining, even working side by side inmates of Arkham Asylum.
Gordon was eventually retired and was succeeded by Ellen Yin. However, as of the year 2027, Barbara Gordon has yet to reveal her secret to him. However, one could speculate he deduced the truth and is secretly proud of her.
