Wayne Enterprises grew from humble beginnings. Founded by the Wayne family in the 17th century as Wayne Corp., a merchant house, it grew into a multinational conglomerate worth billions. The company branched off into every possible industry such as Technology, Biomedical, Applied Science, Shipping, Medical and Electronics. Dr. Thomas Wayne served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors until his murder.

Bruce Wayne suddenly reappeared after years of travel and took over his company. All the while, through trusts and not-for-profits, Wayne bought up enough shares of Wayne Enterprises to become majority stockholder. Long-time friend of the Wayne family, Lucius Fox is joint CEO but prefers to personally oversee WayneTech, the technology arm of Wayne Industries.

When Clayface was recaptured, Wayne Industries headed to effort to cure him. For months, the head of the Biomedical department, Dr. Desmond, tested Clayface for three months and extracted tissue samples for analysis. After some time, they finally created a cure. However, the lab was infiltrated by Basil Karlo. After ingesting some of Clayface's concentrated mutagen, Karlo became the second Clayface. In the confrontation, the original Clayface was cured but Karlo still retained his powers.

Wayne Industries has often been targeted by super villains for its cutting edge technology such as Mr. Freeze, Count Vertigo, and the Joker but the corporation has also formerly employed those who would become villains. Dr. Kirk Langstrom, Cosmo Krank, and Ethan Bennett were all employees at one time of Wayne Industries. The worst breach of Wayne Industries was when advance agents of the Joining replaced a WayneTech lab with robot duplicates and created metal alloys to ship all over the world in preparation for an invasion. After the Bat Family and Martian Manhunter stopped the invasion, WayneTech was the recipient of five space ships for further study.
