In 1635, a Norwegian mercenary founded Gotham City. It was later taken over by the British. During the American Revolutionary War, it was the site of many battles. During the later Civil War era, it was a sanctuary for runaway slaves. Gotham also became infamous for the occult.

In the late 1800's, Gotham became a thriving coal mining town. Miles of tunnels line the catacombs underneath the city. It wasn't until centuries later that the area was revisited. The Joker lined the tunnels with dynamite and planned to detonate it and level Gotham as he fled with stolen goods. Eastern European laborers were brought in to build what became modern day Gotham City. Around this time, the great-grandfather of Bruce Wayne constructed the Gotham Clock Tower, which became the center of may legends, such as being home to Frank Scolacci's Cat's Eyes Emeralds. Despite the thriving boom, three businessmen (Bolton, Winslow, and Parish) conspired to use the workers' lake home as an illegal dumping ground for industrial waste. Destitute and angry, they used their knowledge of the occult to create Solomon Grundy to hunt down the trio's descendents and get revenge. It is believed Grundy rises on All Hallow's Eve only during a total lunar eclipse. It remains an urban myth.

In the 20th century, Gotham's architecture became exaggerated with Art Deco and Nouveau styles. It quickly became a dark and foreboding place, notorious for corruption and all forms of urban decay. This came about as it rapidly developed into a crucial economic bloodline for the United States. Finance, Manufacturing and Shipping are three major businesses present. Its most famous corporation is Wayne Industries, which specializes in charity and technological research and development, GothCorp, Chlorogene, Karon Industries, and a division of LexCorp Industries. The city is powered through a main power grid and a nuclear power plant. Gotham's super computer contains private data such as financials.

According to statistics, 750,832 males live in the city but Gotham is famous for being home to the some of the richest people alive, including Bruce Wayne and software giant, Robert Howard, and the city's resident protector, Batman. Although Batman's dedication is tolerated by the police department, his level of support is precarious. Batman continued to operate in Gotham City to at least 2027 when he and Nightwing fought Mr. Freeze at the Gotham Airport. 1000 years later on August 8th, a group of police officers discovered the remnants of the Batcave in order to save Gotham from Mr. Freeze once and for all. The Batcave became their center of operations since.

The Joining, an alien race of planet conquerors, infiltrated Gotham City and kidnapped Lucius Fox. With robot duplicated in place, Gotham became the focal point of the Joining's invasion. The police department, under Commissioner Gordon's command, fought back alongside inmates of Arkham Asylum. Gotham was saved by the Bat Family and Martian Manhunter but it was left mostly devastated. One year after the invasion of the Joining, the city put out a special event, Gotham Reborn, to celebrate a $100 Million donation being delivered to them by Superman. Metallo crashed the event and attacked Superman. This was the beginning of several villains, from across America, arriving in Gotham in search of technologies to use in their evil plans. Luckily, their hero counterparts followed.
