Gotham City's stately Wayne Manor hides a secret. The Great Great Grandfather of Bruce Wayne took part in the Underground Railroad, which helped transport escaped slaves north. He utilized a series of caverns under the mansion's southwest wing. Generations later, Bruce Wayne re-discovered the caverns. With the help of a family friend, Lucius Fox, Wayne used the space to engineer his arsenal and suit and kept a small space to hold them. To prevent a cave-in, he secured it with titanium reinforcements. The Batmobile is also parked here. Its entrance and exit is the face of an unassuming cave wall. From inside Wayne Manor, passage to the Batcave is located in various places, including behind a grandfather clock. While Batman prefers to use a magnified pole to get to and from the cave, Alfred Pennyworth uses the secret elevator.

Three years later, Batman's Batcave grew in size to accomodate new technology and various mementos from cases that he solved. Of note, the Batcave is home to a giant penny, a giant Scarface, and a Jewel of Ra. The Batcave feeds into secret spider holes constructed all over Gotham City. After Alfred Pennyworth, Robin and Batgirl were privy to the Batcave. After the Joining, the Justice League was given access. Several villains also infiltrated the cave, including Count Dracula, D.A.V.E., Wrath, and Scorn. In case of emergency, Batman kept a second operations set up beneath WayneTech in Gotham City.

On August 8, 3027, a group of police officers found the Batcave in search of a way to defeat Mr. Freeze. Despite finding a data storage, they were unable to activate it. After sorting through artifacts (a painting and an antique wheelchair), one of the officers realized Batman placed binary code all over the reinforcements. The officers reinitialized the Bat Computer and interacted with a video recording. After neutralizing Mr. Freeze and imprisoning him in stasis in the cave, the police upgraded the Batcave and used it as a new base of operations.
