During his years of battle against Superman, Lex Luthor discovered that radiation from a red sun could temporarily strip Superman of his powers. Luthor constructed a ray gun that simulated the radiation. After arming Black Mask with one of the guns, Luthor left his Gotham hires to concoct a way to kill Superman. However, Batman and Robin intervened. In the fight, a hole in the roof radiated Superman with sunrays and restored his power. Superman crushed the gun and returned it to Lex Luthor.
