Dick Grayson was a co-star in his family act, "The Flying Graysons" who performed for Haly's Circus. Grayson was trained as a toddler and exhibited a natural ability for showmanship. Mary Grayson, his mother, nicknamed him "Robin" and fashioned a costume for him. On one fateful day, the Grayson's confronted Tony Zucco who attempted to manipulate extortion money out of them. When John Grayson refused and Batman turned over one of his brothers to the police, Zucco sabotaged the Grayson's highwire platform. The pre-teen Grayson and Gotham City's elite watched in horror as his parents fell to their deaths. Guilty for being unable to do anything, Grayson was lost and couldn't find anything fair about what happened.

Bruce Wayne paid for the funeral and decided to adopt him. Grayson noticed Wayne's constant absences and was haunted by his parents' murder. Alfred Pennyworth implored Wayne to act as a father figure and revealed Wayne's tragedy to Grayson. While trying to fall asleep, Grayson spied on Pennyworth returning from the Batcave through the grandfather clock. While walking the Batcave, he encountered Batman. Batman revealed his secret identity to Grayson and explained he was tracking Zucco alone so that Grayson wouldn't be consumed by revenge. Grayson donned his late mother's costume and joined Batman against Zucco. Rather than let him fall to his own death, Grayson saved Zucco and turned him over to the police. Batman saw a kindred soul in Grayson and offered him partnership. He agreed and took the name Robin.

One week into training with Batman, Robin was still impulsive and failed to follow Batman's lead. After a meeting with Batgirl, Batman brought both to the Batcave and revealed each other's secret identities. Grayson enrolled at a local middle school but often faked sickness to ditch his studies and aid Batman. Despite training, Robin and Batgirl continued to disobey Batman and even went on patrol without him. However, Robin has come to his own in certain situations. He discovered the true John Marlowe and utilized a prototype quantex to create an army of Robin clones to fight the Everywhere Men. A year later, he took Metallo's Kryptonite and secured it in the WayneTech Batcave. He also began enrollment at Gotham High School but found it hard to fit in while being connected to billionaire Bruce Wayne.

Grayson also developed an affinity for video games. He designed an Internet game character and named it Nightwing. About a decade later, in 2017, Grayson retired the Robin mantle and took on a new identity as Nightwing. 10 years later, he and Batman confronted Mr. Freeze at the Gotham Airport. Nightwing continues to plead with Batman to retire but the mission never ends. Much to his annoyance, Batman and Oracle still refer to his as Robin but the trio are still on good terms with each other.
