In Denver, Colorado, Dr. Saul Erdel attempted to send and receive a deep space signal tp find alien life. Instead, he teleported a Martian to Earth. Erdel suffered a fatal heart attack but managed to issue the Martian a warning. J'onn Jonzz decided his immediate concerns were survival and concealment. For some reason, Erdel's device damaged part of his consciousness and his memories of Mars were distorted. With the power of shapeshifting, Jonzz took on the appearance of Dr. Erdel and used the late doctor's television to learn about humans. Jonzz concluded that he wanted to be a force of good and took on the appearance of a murdered police detective, John Jones.

After detecting the arrival of the Joining, Jones requested transfer to the Gotham Police Department. He surmised Batman's secret and tried to warn him. Instead, Wayne surprised him with a knowledge of Martians and even managed to conjure an image to block Jones' telepathy. The duo teamed up and stopped the first Joining invasion. With the planet's defenses still weak, the Manhunter journeyed around the world and recruited other super heroes to join him and from a group. He came up with the Justice League and construction on a space station satellite headquarters began. Manhunter then approached Batman last and predictably, Batman already knew.

After Hawkman was absent for a week, and with Superman and Flash's disappearances, the rest of the Justice League began to suspect foul play. While investigating the Central City Fairgrounds, Manhunter and Green Lantern were kidnapped. The League was stripped of their powers and got their powers back by using Batman's doomsday scenario weapons on their superdroid counterpart. Manhunter used a flame thrower but had to contend with his droid's growing telepathy. With the invasion beginning, Manhunter helped search Hugo Strange's mind for command codes to deactivate the Joining and relayed them to Batgirl who set up a signal with the Justice League Satellite.
