Hal Jordan followed in the footsteps of his father, Martin "The Flying Martini" Jordan as a test pilot for Coast City-based Ferris Aircraft. Jordan soon fell in love with his boss, Carol Ferris. Soon after, the Green Lantern known as Abin Sur crash landed on Earth with mortal wounds. Sur commanded his green power ring to seek out a man honest and fearless enough to succeed him. The ring found two candidates, Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan. Since Hal Jordan was closer in proximity, he was chosen. Sur offered parting words and informed him that the Guardians would send for him soon.

Jordan was ushered into the integalactic law enforcement unit, the Green Lantern Corps, and was trained by Sinestro, one of the most respected Lanterns. When Sinestro revealed his intentions to overthrow the Guardians and found a new world order, Jordan refused to join him and rallied the Corps. Sinestro was caught and imprisoned. Jordan managed to balance his new calling with returning to Earth and working his civilan job at Ferris.

After the Joining was defeated, the Martian Manhunter recruited Green Lantern to join the newly formed Justice League. About a year later, Sinestro escaped his prison and journeyed to Earth for Jordan. With Justice League Satellite sensors offline, Green Lantern went to the Batcave for help in tracking Sinestro. Undaunted by the lack of detection, Jordan planned to fly a jet back to Coast City from Gotham when he was attacked. Barely conscious, Jordan ordered his ring to seek out Batman for safe keeping. Instead, the ring was taken by the Penguin. After awakening, Jordan took his Lantern Battery and drove an oil rig into the city. After Sinestro was defeated, Green Lantern was impressed with Batman's stand against the villain.

While investigating the Central City Fairgrounds with Batman, Green Arrow, and Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern was abducted by Hugo Strange. He later got his powers back by using one of Batman's doomsday scenario weapons, a gun that launched yellow powder, on his superdroid counterpart. With the invasion beginning, Green Lantern and Superman flew into space to try and slow down the armada. After the Joining was disabled, Green Lantern hurled the Mothership into the Sun.
