Justin, David, & Amber are a group of friends often treated as misfits and outcasts. This continuted into their college years at Gotham University. However, thirsting for revenge, they decided to take their inspiration from former idol, the Batman, whom the felt represented power, freedom, and the animal motif was appealing. They hacked into Professor Langstrom's computer and stole the formula for the mutagen that transformed him into Man Bat.
The Terrible Trio was formed. David concocted patches that temporarily transformed them into man beasts. Justin became Shark, David became Fox, and Amber became Vulture, after the three elements of water, earth, and air. The Trio attacked various classmates who slighted them in the past. However, the University President, Dr. Phillips issued a mandatory drug test of every student when it became apparent the criminals were students themselves.
The Trio then targeted a football game and planned to detonate a payload of the mutagen. The resulting cloud would mutate everyone in attendance to the game. Professor Langstrom created an aerosol antidote for Batman. Justin and Amber were reverted to normal but David was accidentally doused in multiple doses. He turned into a chimera-like beast and rampaged through the game. He was electrocuted into submission and returned to normal. While Amber was sent to an all woman's prison, Justin and David were sent to the same correctional facility where they still remained misfits.
