Sinestro was born on the planet Korugar and grew to become a fearless warrior. His aptitudes made Sinestro a prime candidate for the Green Lantern Corps. As a Green Lantern, he was assigned Space Sector 1417. Sinestro served for years and became one of the most experienced Lanterns and was revered as a paragon of the Corps. Over time, Sinestro began to operate by fear in order to act as the one constant, unassailable force against the chaos in the universe. He concluded that the Guardians became weak and the Corps were reduced to mere garbage collectors. He envisioned a new order, built not by the faint of heart, to destroy the chaos. Sinestro believed his sacrifices would be worth it to bring absolute justice.
He was later assigned to be the teacher of new recruit, Hal Jordan. After Sinestro acquired a Yellow Power Ring and was ready to overthrow the Guardians, he offered Jordan the chance to join him. Jordan refused and rallied the rest of the Corps against him. Sinestro was defeated and imprisoned in a stasis cell. He soon escaped and went straight to Earth to kill Jordan and take his ring as an extra power source. He managed to avoid detection by Earth technology and attacked Jordan at a Gotham air field. The ring was sent away to the Batman but came into the Penguin's possession. Sinestro proceeded to kill him. The Batman and Jordan intervened and defeated him.
