Dr. Sam Scudder was a brilliant optical physicist but turned to a life of crime. While tinkering in a Central City Prison workshop, he discovered how to create realistic holograms with mirrors. Scudder made a daring jail break with his breakthrough discovery. After mastering all types of reflective properties and creating devices such as the Portal Ray and discovering the Mirror Dimension, Scudder became a costumed criminal called the Mirror Master. Mirror Master became of the constant enemy of the Flash.
Along with his sidekick, Smoke, Mirror Master relocated to Gotham City and cloned super heroes by forming their energized reflections. Scudder commanded the clones to steal various components around Gotham: a prism from Gotham Advanced Optics and a lens from a grinding plant. Mirror Master planned to create a specular trap to collect the 100 richest people of Gotham and ransom them for billions of dollars. The Flash and the Batman tracked his energy consumption and stopped him.
A short time later, Mirror Master resurfaced in Central City and hid at the Fairground's Hall of Mirrors, the perfect cover. After receiving a tip, Green Arrow and the Flash arrived to recapture him. However, Hugo Strange was also monitoring the event and rigged several traps to ambush heroes with super powers. An hour later, Green Arrow awoke and the Flash was gone. The rest of the Justice League returned to the scene only to lose Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter.
