Origins unknown, it has been agreed on that a man with a desire to make people laugh fell into a vat of chemicals but survived. With his skin bleached and lips fixed in a smile, he became the Joker. The Joker engaged in psychopathic crimes to carry out this desire. However, after his first meeting with the Batman, he sensed they would be forever linked, like comedy and tragedy. Some are not convinced the Joker is a normal psychopath but one who treads the line that separates sanity and insanity. He still is a murderer but his actions are planned, calculated, and executed with a certain flair and sophistication.

Armed with his wits, razor sharp playing cards, and the deadly Joker Gas, the Joker first appeared in Arkham Asylum. He announced that he was going to take over the facility and use it as his hideout. This was only a calling card, a way of announcing his plan beforehand. It would become the Joker's modus operandi, an expression of pure egotism. When the Batman spoiled his debut, the Joker retreated to his original hideout, the Monarch Factory, and planned to detonate a hot air balloon, filled with Joker Gas, over Gotham City. The Joker was captured and sentenced to life in prison. However, he manipulated an orderly into impersonating him as he prepared to escape and exact revenge on those that were involved on his sentence.

As a way of demonstrating his ownership of Gotham, the Joker developed a Joker Putty to reshape the city's monument in his image. Instead, the Joker kidnapped Detective Ethan Bennett and tortured him for hours. Bennett was then exposed to his last batch of Putty and mutated into Clayface. Clayface often tried to capture the Joker to prove his innocence and overcome the insanity implanted in his mind by the Joker. Months later, while using an experimental mind reader, the Batman discovered that the Joker's former self still existed but was completed dominated by the Joker.

The Joker decided to become Gotham's newest vigilante and dressed as the Batman. Armed with a deadlier strain of his gas, called Joker Venom, the Joker attacked those who committed the most minor of crimes: jaywalking, taking 11 items to a 10 item of less check out lane, or speeding. While infected, the Batman managed to cure himself and told a joke that convinced the Joker to return to his roots as a villain.

Months later, the Joker and the Penguin escaped Arkham Asylum in search of a mob treasure. The Joker encountered the Batman instead and was electrocuted by his own joy buzzer and was presumed dead by drowning. The Batman was shocked at his hand in the death of another. The Joker survived and awoke tangled in a fisherman's net. He returned to Gotham Cemetary and was turned into a vampire by Count Dracula. The Joker attacked a local blood bank but was captured by the Batman and used as a test subject for a cure. In the meantime, the Batman bartered with the Joker for the location of Count Dracula. After curing him, the Joker passed out with no recollection of what happened.

Some time later, the Joker stole Bane's power infusion module and went on a super powered rampage through the city. It culminated in his theft of the Gotham Globe but the Batman and his new partner Batgirl defeated him. Not unlike the Batman, Joker began to slowly amass a family of his own: two henchmen named Punch and Judy, a pair of albino laughing hyenas, a girlfriend named Harley Quinn, a tech named Marty Slacker, an almost surrogate son...and a double crossing nanite duplicate of himself.

The Joker attempted to issue an endgame. After discovering abandoned mine shafts under Gotham City, the Joker used the subway to brainwash people into throwing out valuables into the Gotham River where he would recover them. The Joker would then leave Gotham in a train and detonate miles of dynamite, collapsing Gotham into oblivion. He was defeated again. Undaunted, the Joker was wary of the emergence of Wrath and Scorn. He realized they were going to steal his thunder and destroy the Batman. Before they could reveal his secret identity, the Joker doused them with Joker Gas. The Bat Family's ultimate defeat would be a masterpiece devised and implemented by him, alone.
