The Joining is a synthetic alien race of robots built by a long forgotten face. Its core programming was to operate as one mind, harvest a planet's technology, and destroy what's left. It appears that the Joining was intended was a doomsday weapon. However, they killed their creators and ravaged over half of the galaxy like a plague. Over time, it evolved by incorporating technology of its victims.

In the 21st century, the Joining planned to invade the planet Earth. Out of precedence, they sent advance agents to test the human race. The agents infiltrated WayneTech in Gotham City and replaced its most senior officer, Lucius Fox. They kept Fox alive for information purposes and replaced the assembly workers with robots. The plant shipped new metal hybrids around the world in preparation for an invasion. The Martian Manhunter discovered the truth and as his alter-ego, transferred to Gotham to stop them.

By the time, the Batman and Martian Manhunter allied together, the fleet activated and attacked undaunted. To them, they improved WayneTech technology. However, the Batman planned to exploit a built-in molecular instability to shut off the ships. However, to do so, two people had to hack the Wayne Industries satellite relay from inside and outside the building. The Bat Family and Manhunter raced to shut down the ships as they began to rise above major cities of the world and connect into super weapons. Hugo Strange managed to escape Arkham Asylum during the attacks and scavenged a downed ship of parts. Before being shut off, the agents of the Joining were amazed by the resilience of humans.

The world began to rebuild for a year as Strange used the central communicator to make contact with the Joining Mothership. He stuck up a deal with them. In exchange for stealing the powers of the world's super heroes, the Joining would gift Strange with all the knowledge of the universe they stole. Despite Strange's warnings of the Batman, the Joining were more concerned with creating a strike force of androids with super powers. As the Justice League tried to recover their powers, the Mothership arrived in orbit and began launching their fleet. While the majority of the League fought the invasion forces, the Martian Manhunter, Batgirl, Robin, and the Batman tried to use Strange's mind to find shut off codes and relay the signal from the Justice League Satellite. The Justice League succeeded and destroyed the Mothership.
