Nathan Finch was an unrivaled racer in the underground circuits and was also infamous for the thrill of the chase. He was later involved in a brutal automobile accident that left him paralyzed. Finch was saved when most of his body was replaced with cutting edge cybernetics and nanotechnology from an unknown benefactor. Finch's right eye and arm were outright replaced. His eye could interface with vehicles and automatically pilot them. His arm could interface with them by injecting a nanovirus that integrates his body and mind with it. If he recalls his interface, the vehicle reverts to its original form.
Finch took the name Gearhead and pursued the thrill again, which drew him into a life of crime. Gearhead first appeared at Gotham City Speedway during a charity race. Gearhead defeated the race leader, Bruce Wayne, and stole the prize money. The Batman later pursued him after he attacked an armored car. The Batmobile was outclassed and destroyed in the pursuit. While upgrading a spare Batmobile, Gearhead chased a bullet train, loaded with a money transfer from the Gotham Treasury. After Batgirl stalled him, the new Batmobile arrived. Gearhead was impressed and obliged the Batman in a rematch. Gearhead was outclassed and knocked over into a ditch. The Batman baited him into interfacing with the Batmobile, which was also upgraded with a new security system. He was electrocuted and taken into custody.
