Nearly 20 years ago, Francis Gray work at a watch repair shop and had just started a family with his wife Beth and newborn son, Matt. However, the Gray Family were behind in unpaid bills. Desperate, Gray stole a rare timepiece from his workplace. While running away, he set off a chain reaction that caused massive damage. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison. While in prison, he was given a job as a watch repairman. He became so obsessed with watches that he could see time unravel. Then 2 years into his sentence, Gray manifested super powers. He could manipulate time and relive a day. For the next 15 years, Gray mastered his power but was unable to go back 20 years and undo his crime.
Meanwhile, Beth Gray divorced him and took their son with her. Embittered, Gray decided to punish Gotham City. He began to steal base components for radium trichloromethate, a poison gas. After botching each theft, Gray would do over the crime with new knowledge of what to get right. He then rigged the New Year's Ball to emit the gas on Gotham when the New Year countdown sounded off in Gotham Times Square. Amazingly, the Batman was able to alter his moves each time but it wasn't enough. When all of Gotham, including Matt Gray were killed, Gray was helpless to save his own son. Gray finally achieved a state of emotion that sent him back to the past before he stole the timepiece. Instead, he stopped himself.
The timeline changed and the Gray Family remained intact. Once he had enough money saved up, Gray opened his own business, Gray & Son Repair. Before New Year's Eve, the Gray's were hired to fix the grandfather clock at Wayne Mansion.
