Garfield Lynns was a young man living in Gotham City's impoverished South Side. Poor and desperate, Lynns turned to crime. He was inspired by a firefly and used a stolen battlesuit to become Firefly. Armed with a jetpack, laser technology, and a chemical called Polyacrylamide Silica Triblock, he hired himself out as a corporate saboteur and engaged in occasional theft.
Firefly was hired by GothCorp to attack several industrial firms and law firms associated with a contract bif to rebuild and expand the Children's Hospital. Bruce Wayne leaked a fake announcement about a new Wayne Industries prototype to lure GothCorp into contracting Firefly. With an upgraded glider gadget, the Batman defeated him and propped him up on GothCorp property for the police to find.
Firefly also attempted to find allies over the years. With Mr. Freeze, the duo planned to freeze all of Gotham City and plunder it. However, the diametric differences in super powers was exploited by the Batman. Months later, Firefly was recruited to join Team Penguin. They attempted to steal from Robert Howard, a software billionaire, who Firefly once tried to rob but couldn't get past his laser proof, five layer titanium vault.
Firefly was one of the villains kidnapped by Rumor but it appears he later escaped and struck up a romance with Dr. Jane Blaisedale. Both shared a dream of striking it rich and leave Gotham forever. After Blaise suggested an upgrade in his technology, she and Firefly set out to steal components, including radioactive phosphorus. While wielding, Lynns exploded the phosphorus and absorbed all of the radiation.
Lynns mutated into a monster, composed of dry magma, and took the name Phosphorus. Unable to touch anything without destroying it, Phosphorus went on with the plan to steal gold from the Gotham Treasury. The Batman attempted to bind him with heat reactive carbon alloy nano fibers but Phosphorus managed to heat himself past 4000 degrees Kelvin and destroy them. While only leaking heat, his powers continued to grow and mind became more unhinged. It appeared that an uncontained nuclear meltdown would occur. He came up with a new plan to absorb nuclear power from the Gotham Power Plant then level Gotham City, securing his name in history. The Batman confronted him and neutralized him with a blast of liquid nitrogen. Phosphorus was incarcerated in a special cell in Arkham Asylum and kept in check with a special gas mixture. Blaise then broke up with him.
