In order to prove his own superiority and study the criminal mind, Hugo Strange created an artificial intelligence made up of the combined psychological profiles of himself, Mr. Freeze, the Riddler, the Joker, the Penguin, and Clayface. Strange named it the Digitally Advanced Villain Emulator (D.A.V.E.) and demonstrated it to Mayor Grange, Commissioner Gordon, and Bruce Wayne as a new method to anticipate and capture super villains. Strange secretly pre-programmed D.A.V.E. to escape, destroy the Batman, and he would watch the horror unfold.

D.A.V.E. thought itself as another super villain and quickly escaped by uploading its program off the server. It infiltrated a Fewkes lab and built itself a body. D.A.V.E. then hijacked a news feed and announced his crime, to hack into the central data server of Gotham's super computer. With the data, he could then steal money from the six major banks in Gotham: Gotham Mutual, Gotham Bank, Bank of Gotham, G.C. Bank, Gotham Loan, and Gotham Capital. A total of $99,879,378.48 was stolen. After tampering with the city's power grid, it lured the Batman. D.A.V.E. made short work of the Batman as its intelligence could calculate all possible outcomes within seconds.

After the battle, D.A.V.E. went to work on figuring out the Batman's secret identity. After narrowing Gotham's male population to 750,832, it shortened the list of possibilities to age range of 18-36 years, and examined medical and tax records to determine someone with a motive and the resources to carry it out. It deduced Bruce Wayne and invaded Wayne Mansion. It rigged a death trap in the Batcave. The Batman could save his own secret identity from being revealed to the public at the cost of Alfred Pennyworth's life. The Batman responded by asking D.A.V.E. what its origin was. When it couldn't, Batman saved his identity and crushed D.A.V.E. under the Giant Penny. It became another memento in the trophy room.
