Countess Mircalla Karnstein died and due to supernatural affiliction, became a vampire. She took the name Carmilla, an anagram, and wandered the area of Styria attacking women with another, allegedly her mother. To protect herself from hunters, Carmilla's tomb was relocated to a secret location in Styria's vast forest. Her methods remain unchanged. She often meets her victims in a dream, meets the victim in real life, the victim becomes ill, then in the night, Carmilla appears in their bedroom in the form of a feline beast and bites their neck. One witness of her pattern was General Spielsdorf, whose niece Bertha Rheinfeldt, was an unfortunate victim.
She was believed to be killed at the order of the Hapsburg Monarchy but Carmilla survived and wed Count Dracula. After a riot, she was killed by sunlight. Dracula kept her ashes in an urn, planning to resurrect her only to be impaled and relocated to Gotham City. Centuries later, Dracula was resurrected by the Penguin. The Count chose Gotham TV News reporter Vicky Vale to supply the essence required to restore Carmilla. The process was interrupted by Batman and she remained as ashes.
