Artie Brown was a brilliant child prodigy. Brown entered into a Gotham game show called Think, Thank, Thunk. He garnered a 12 week undefeated record and became increasingly obnoxious. The show staff rigged the next episode to make him lose to newcomer, Yelena Kleimenoff. After his mother lost a lawsuit against the show, Brown dropped out of school and disappeared into seclusion with his consolation prize, a lifetime supply of Kremelos.

Brown never forgot the scandal and plotted revenge for 30 years. As the Cluemaster, he dispatched his henchmen to kidnap Ross Darren, former host, Herbert Zeigler, former producer, and Kleimenoff. He then forced them to play a round of Think, Thank, Thunk above a pit of acid under his mother's home. They could go free if he was unable to answer a question. The Batman intervened and after deeming him a worthy challenge, allowed the hero to ask him a question. The Batman asked him what was Batman's secret identity. While Cluemaster was in a fit of rage, the Batman defeated him.

Years later, Cluemaster was one of the super villains kidnapped by Rumor. After the Batman and Robin stopped the vigilante, Cluemaster was returned to police custody and most likely to Arkham Asylum.
