Spike was once the mechanic of the super villain, Atlas. He held nothing but grand admiration for Atlas who in turn hated him. However, Atlas needed Spike to cater to his demands. The parasitic relationship continued for some time until Atlas challenged Cyborg to a rematch. While held captive, Robin convinced Spike that Atlas was afraid of him and pushed Spike around to keep him in check. Spike realized the truth and abandoned Atlas.
