Angela Roth became involved with a cult and during a summoning, she was chosen by Trigon to be his bride. After impregnating her, Trigon abandoned her and began a prophecy in which their child would aid in his evil. Roth took refuge in Azarath and raised her daughter. Despite the prophecy, the people of Azarath accepted her and renamed her Arella or "Messanger Angel." Her daughter was given the name Raven.
Arella raised Raven with love, perhaps in hopes that it would overcome the evil in her someday. She also appears to have taught Raven how to control her emotions and powers. Arella wears the Anja Chakra, a symbol of unity, on her forehead, as does Raven. Years later, Arella remained on Azarath after Trigon ravaged it. She and Raven were reunited one last time when Raven returned in search of help. Arella could only remind her the prophecy was absolute.
