After Starfire, Robin, Beast Boy, Raven, and Cyborg teamed up to defeat the Gordanians, they became friends. Robin and Cyborg thought it would condusive if they all stayed in contact. They designed and built a sophisticated communicator from Cyborg's own circuits and gave everybody one. It is also a wonder of telemetry. The communicator is programmed to intercept phone calls, radio transmissions, hack into any database, monitor vital signs, track others, displays the other party on video, and is transmitted to receivers on the Titans and vehicles.

Over time, the Teen Titans encountered kindred souls and gave them a Titans Communicator to symbolize both their trust in them as an ally and friend and to induct them as an honorary Titan. However, their worst enemies managed to gain a communicator. Terra gave her communicator to Slade and the Brotherhood of Evil got one when Madame Rouge fooled Robin into giving her his. Ultimately, they tapped into conversations and studied the Titans, plotting their downfall. When Robin realized the Brotherhood has a communicator, he hacked into the communicator and activated a network-wide self-destruct before guiding Beast Boy to the secret Titans outpost. After the Brotherhood was defeated, the communicators were rebuilt and redistributed.
