Born on the planet Tamaran, in the Vega star system, Koriand'r is second in line to the throne of Grand Ruler. Raised by her K'Norfka, Galfore, Koriand'r became a great warrior and unmatched beauty. As a tradition, Koriand'r and her sister, Komand'r, were sent across Vega to be trained by several masters, including the Warlords of Okaara. However, Koriand'r was captured by the scourge of the galaxy, the Gordanians. Set to be a prize presented to the Citadel, Koriand'r escaped to a nearby planet, Earth. She landed in Jump City, California and went on a rampage trying to destroy her restraints. After being helped by Robin, she kissed him and instantly learned English. Wary of accepting his aid, she warned them to leave her alone. However, a collection of teenagers banded together to help her fight the Gordanians. After the battle, she translated her name to Starfire and wished to stay on Earth with her new friends.

Earth was new to Starfire, and like an eager foreign exchange student, she couldn't wait to learn about it. As the emotional anchor of the Teen Titans, Starfire is innocent, emotional, sweet, funny, and equally strong as a warrior. She is also allegedly skilled in cooking and singing. Like most Tamaranians, she is allergic to metallic chromium. Starfire was often scared that she wouldn't fit in, she would sometimes say things incorrectly, and swear in Tamaranian. Although she was homesick and spoke to her sister in transmissions, Starfire was set on calling Earth her new home. Robin became her best friend. From the start, she harbored romantic feelings, but waited for the day, he would admit his to her.

At first, Starfire was thrilled when her sister Blackfire arrived on Earth. However, feelings of inferiority resurfaced when Blackfire appeared to bond more closely with the Titans. Intent on leaving, Starfire was mistakingly attacked by the Centauri Police, who were searching for Blackfire. She defeated her sister and turned her over to the authorities. Starfire later found herself trapped in Raven's body and vice versa when the Puppet King infiltrated the Titans Tower and took over the others' bodies. Starfire and Raven confided in each other to learn about their powers and grew closer in the process. Starfire often engaged in meditation with Raven after the ordeal, and Raven tried to go shopping with her from time to time.

While battling the super villain, Warp, Starfire attacked him and was trapped 20 years in the future. She encountered the disbanded Teen Titans and convinced them to help her find Warp and return to her time. After reuniting with her team in the present at the point right after she disappeared, Starfire revealed the future to them.

In their life cycle, every Tamaranian goes through a brief transformation. On the second day, she developed tusks on her neck then long and ugly fingernails on the third. Bizarre cravings, scales and big feet followed. Fearful of becoming a monster, Starfire fled Earth and was stalked by a Cyramillian Chrysalis Eater. Just as she went into chrysalis, the Teen Titans arrived and fought the beast. Starfire emerged back to normal and defeated the Chrysalis Eater with a new power, she could emit starbolts as lasers from her eyes.

Many people, civilian, heroes, and villains alike were attracted to Starfire but none compared to their crushes when she learned she was set up in an arranged marriage to Glyrdsklechhh as part of a scheme hatched by Blackfire, the new Grand Ruler of Tamaran. When the Titans unraveled the plot, Starfire challenged Blackfire for the crown and won. After being declared Empress, Starfire quickly nominated her former K'Norfka Galfore as the Grand Ruler. Soon after, Beast Boy revealed to her that he kept one of Killer Moth's larva and named it Silkie. To keep it a secret, he made Starfire hide it in her room. Starfire and Silkie instantly bonded. After Killer Moth took back Silkie and transformed into a beast, Starfire was able to reason with it. Robin agreed to keep Silkie as the Titans' resident pet.

After venturing into space on a mission with Val-Yor, Starfire learned about the prejudice others hold for Tamaranians. She refused to give into their hate and ignorance and even saved Val-Yor's life as the destroyed the Locrix. Back home, she managed to teach Cyborg Tamaranian and used her nine stomachs to resist Mother Mae-Eye's hypnosis and free the others in time.

While the Titans journeyed across Earth, Starfire went alone into the Russian wilderness and met Red Star. Due to her immunity to radiation, she was able to learn and befriend the reclusive hero. When Red Star absorbed a beast's radiation and went critical, Starfire took him into space so he could disperse the planet shattering energy. Soon after, on their final recruitment drive, Starfire went to New Zealand and recruited Argent only to be attacked by Killer Moth and Kitten soon after. However, Starfire evaded capture and regrouped with Red Star and Bumblebee. The trio then arrived at the Brotherhood of Evil's Paris base in the midst of the final battle. Some time later, Starfire discovered she was an aunt. Blackfire and Glgrdsklechhh married and had four children. Starfire, however, soon realized Blackfire planned to impersonate her again while the children ate her.
