Dick Grayson was a 8 year old acrobatic prodigy when he began performing alongside his parents as the Flying Graysons of Haley's Circus. It was this time as a circus performer that made him fearless. Grayson's mother affectionally referred to him as her "little robin." While Haley's performed in Gotham City, he happened to witness a gangster named Tony Zucco attempt to extort Mr. Haley. When Haley refused, Zucco swore he would regret it. Later that night, Grayson watched in horror as his parents died when the high wire snapped.

The Gotham billionaire Bruce Wayne adopted Grayson as his ward. He was frustated by his guilt and Wayne's lack of attention. Grayson left Wayne Manor and tried to solve the murder himself. Along the way he encountered Zucco and Batman. When Grayson woke up, he was in the Batcave and Batman revealed his secret identity. Batman saw a kindred soul in Grayson and wanted to help him in this thirst for justice. As Robin, the Boy Wonder, he became Batman's partner and was trained by the best. Robin was given a similar arsenal, including a cape which is made out of a high density polymerized titanium that's 10 times stronger than steel.

Batman and Robin became known as the Dynamic Duo. Together, they fought crime were the best of friends. In a way, Robin served as Batman's anchor. Without Robin, Batman would live up to his namesake, the Dark Knight and go over the edge like the villains he fought. However, Robin eventually left Batman to work on his own and be his own man. He went west and arrived in Jump City, California just as Starfire did, on the run from Gordanians. Robin was unsure if she was a threat but freed Starfire from her arm restraints. To complicate matters, she kissed him but it was later revealed this was how Tamaranians assimilated languages of foreign planets.

Starfire and the Gordanians' appearance also attracted the attention of Beast Boy, Raven, and Cyborg. However, Robin was uninterested in teaming up and went it alone but as Lord Trogaar issued his demands, a team up was in order. Robin took charge as leader and convinced the hesitant Raven to join them. Together, they defeated the strike team. Robin and Cyborg decided it would be beneficial if they all stayed in contact and created communicators for everyone. Soon after, they formed the Teen Titans. The Titans Tower was constructed by Robin and Cyborg. However, Robin wouldn't allow Cyborg to install a disco ball. Robin and Starfire shared a close friendship with each other and both didn't admit their romantic feelings to each other.

He was obsessed with the super villain, Slade, became distant, and alienated his team mates. Robin's room was already littered with newspaper clippings of the Titans' exploits but he crossed a line and created a secret villain identity, Red X, to try and get closer to Slade and capture him. Slade figured out the rouse and continued to terrorize the team. The two were evenly matched. While Robin saw him as a criminal psychopath dedicated to destruction, Slade saw Robin as a kindred spirit, equally ruthless as he and wanted him as an apprentice. After infecting the team with nanoscopic probes, Slade blackmailed Robin into becoming his student. Robin bidded his time and waited for an opening. Eventually, he infected himself and forced Slade to destroy the killswitch. Robin was welcomed back to the team after Slade escaped.

Soon after, when Terra appeared in Jump City, Robin and Raven were skeptical. However, after she bested a new combat simulation, Robin was impressed and offered to train her to help master her power. However, Terra thought Beast Boy revealed her secret and ran away. Robin's troubles took a turn for the worse, when Killer Moth blackmailed him into taking his daughter, Kitten, to the junior prom. Robin begrudgingly went along with his demand to buy the Titans enough time to save the Bay Bridge and defeat Moth. Starfire went along undercover and together, they stopped Kitten and her boyfriend, Fang. Robin's obsessive behavior resurfaced, when he and all male heroes were teleported to an alternate dimension to compete in a tournament and determine who was the best. Robin defeated Hotspot, Wildebeest, and Speedy but realized the reason he fights is for his friends and confronted the Master of Games to save everyone.

Things got even weird when Robin was injured chasing Johnny Rancid and met a parallel version of himself, Nosyarg Kcid. Robin was worse off when he broke reality with Nosyarg's magic. However, the imp convinced Robin that was inspired by him because of his constant desire to try no matter what. Nosyarg got his power back, Jump City was saved, and Robin was healed.

Robin was shocked when someone broke into the Titans Tower and stole the Red X suit. Feeling responsible for not being able to destroy the suit and for all the crimes committed with his technology, Robin and the Titans set out to stop Red X. However, they all became embroiled in Professor Chang's debut as a super villain. Red X aided Robin in the final battle but Robin managed to steal back the belt. Red X was impressed and escaped. Red X seemed to have reignited Robin's obsession with Slade. He was never captured or found after the battle with Terra and Robin still couldn't accept he was dead. While investigating confiscated Slade gear, Robin was infected with an activated chemical reagent. It entered Robin's nervous system and made him see illusions of Slade slowly increasing his heart rate, blood pressure, and neurokinetics. The stress on his brain would eventually kill him. Raven entered his mind and tried to solve the problem but was forced out. Robin eventually overcame the agent and returned to normal.

During Independence Day, Mad Mod resurfaced and tried to brainwash all of Jump City. He also stole Robin's youth and left him old and withered. While the rest of the Titans tried various plans to save Robin and the city, he was powerless and could only watch as Mod wrecked havoc. During a parade in his honor, Mod was defeated and Robin got his youth back. Robin and the Titans were later kidnapped by the Amazing Mumbo and tranformed into animal sideshows for his performance. Robin was changed into a monkey but didn't win the audience over very much.

In Jump City's Chinatown, Robin tried to capture the super villain Katarou from stealing a staff but was defeated. Katarou then mentioned he go seek out the True Master in an effort to manipulate his way to gain an audience. Robin took the bait and journeyed west to Asia. He met an elderly woman and hiked a nearby mountain. Robin met and defeated three guardians, each with a specific lesson to teach. Once at the top, Katarou attacked Robin with his own gear but was defeated. The old woman revealed herself as the True Master and trained Robin. After completing his lesson, Robin returned home with a newfound confidence and to noticed everyone was dressed as him. That confidence became crucial when Trigon arrived on Earth through Raven. He braved the hellish realm to save her and convince her there was still hope in defeating the demon.

Upon an attack by Saico Tek, the Titans arrived in Tokyo to find and stop Brushogun. During the mission, Robin beat Saico Tek senseless and was framed by Tokyo Trooper Commander Daizo for murder. Robin escaped and went undercover to find out more about Brushogun. He entered the worst bar in the Shinjuku District and proceeded to interrogate the criminals, only to attract the Troopers. After the Titans reunited, they saved the real Brushogun, and implicated Daizo as the recent incarnation. At the end of the battle, Robin finally admitted his true feelings for Starfire and allowed the team to take a much needed vacation.

After the Brotherhood of Evil resurfaced, Robin saw the need to warn other super heroes of the world and with the Titans, set out to connect with them before it was too late. Robin was too late to save Hotspot. However, the shape shifting Madame Rouge fooled Robin into giving her his Titans Communicator. After being robbed by Ding Dong Daddy, Robin entered a deadly race against the villain to get back a mysterious briefcase. Along the way, Red X reappeared but was convinced to help Robin win when he saved X's life. At the end, rather than keep the secret of the case, he revealed it to his team. When the Brotherhood attacked every Titan simultaneously, Robin blamed himself and activated the self-destruct mechanism in every communicator before being captured. Beast Boy gathered a crack team to confront the Brotherhood and save everyone.

20 years from the present, Robin has changed codenames and operates in Jump City alone, as Nightwing. When he saved a time lost Starfire, Nightwing recalled his Titans Communicator and tried to summon everyone. The Titans reunited to defeat the super villain, Warp and returned Starfire back to the past.
