Larry Trainor was an expert civilian test pilot for the USAAF and friend of Hal Jordan. Trainor took on an unusual mission to pilot an experimental X-19 het into Earth's atmosphere. After the jet malfunctioned from exposure to a solar flare, Trainor and the jet drifted into deep space where he passed by a radiation belt and was exposed to cosmic energy. After returning to Earth, Trainor found his skin was translucent and radioactive but found he could manifest this energy as a superpowered being and control it with his mind. Dr. Niles Caulder approached him and offered special radiation-proof plastic bandages to substitute for a lead-lined cell to contain the radiation. Taking the name Negative Man, he joined the Doom Patrol.
Negative Man lives up to his namesake, literally and figuratively. While in control of the energy called the Negative, his personality is pessimistic and sarcastic. However, he cares for Beast Boy just as much as his adoptive parents, Mento and Elastigirl. The Brain eventually deduced that Negative Man gets weaker the longer he is separated from his body. When frozen, caught in a special psychic net, or otherwise restrained, Negative Man is powerless.
