Steve Dayton is the fifth richest men on Earth. However, his career as psychologist and founder of Dayton Industries was not enough. He craved adventure and love. Dayton invented the Mento Helmet to gift him telepathic powers and allow him to become the super hero, Mento. Mento joined the Doom Patrol and married team mate, Elastigirl. He ran a tight operation on the Doom Patrol, like a military unit. Eventually, Mento and Elastigirl adopted a child named Garfield Logan who then joined the Patrol as Beast Boy.
Despite being stubborn and arrogant, Mento remained as the team leader for years. Mento and Beast Boy began to frequently butt heads over what was more important, the mission or the team. Their relationship fell apart and Beast Boy quit the team. Unfazed, Mento led the Doom Patrol to find the Brotherhood of Evil again. In the Amazon, they were captured. Five months later, as an automatic response, a locator pod was dispatched to find Beast Boy and alert him to the team's disappearance. The Brain restrained Mento with psychic shielding but in the battle with the Teen Titans, Mento discovered the Brain's plans to activate a second Quantum Generator.
As the Patrol was defeated one by one, only Mento and Beast Boy were left. Beast Boy managed to convince Mento to do things his way and infiltrate the base. After knocking out Madame Rouge, Mento and Beast Boy found the Quantum Generator, only to be surrounded by General Immortus' army. The Doom Patrol and Teen Titans arrived to back them up. After teh day was saved, Mento admitted his pride in Beast Boy and thanked the Titans for their support.
