Rita Farr was a famous Hollywood actress until she was exposed to strange gases while shooting a movie on location in Africa. Farr soon discovered she had the power body to grow to macroscopic and microscopic size. She joined the Doom Patrol as Elastigirl and became the team's emotional anchor. She and Mento fell in love and married. They later adopted Garfield Logan and inducted him to the team as Beast Boy.
Elastigirl was rivaled by Madame Rouge of the Brotherhood of Evil, a twisted psychopath bent on destruction. The Brotherhood analyzed the Patrol well and devised extreme measures to neutralize them. When the Patrol was captured in the Amazon, Elastigirl was confined into a special sphere that slowly constricted her. Another measure they took was to freeze her.
