Killer Moth created a legion of moth beasts in his underground laboratory, intent on taking over Jump City. However, the plan took a strange twist when his daughter Kitten demanded he get her a new date for her high school prom. After unleashing several moths on the Bay Bridge, Moth demanded he be declared ruler of the city and for Robin to be Kitten's date. If Kitten were angered at any time, she would trigger the kill switch and unleash every moth on the city. Robin and Starfire managed to destroy the switch and evey moth reverted to its harmless larva form.

Beast Boy wanted to keep one of the larva, M-319, as a pet but Robin forbade him. Beast Boy secretly kept one hidden in his room at Titans Tower and named it Silkie. However, it routinely appeared throughout the Tower beneath the other Titans' notice. During its molting season, it became more aggressive and trashed the Tower. While the Titans searched the Tower for the culprit, Beast Boy entrusted Silkie to Starfire. Around the same time Starfire fed it Tamaranian Zorka Berries, it mutated further and grew in size. After Silkie ate Cyborg's left foot, the Titans demanded Starfire to get rid of it. After being left chained up on a cliff, Silkie was taken by Killer Moth and transformed into a moth again.

Starfire refused to hurt Silkie and tried to reason with it. Silkie became torn between Killer Moth, its creator, and Starfire, its nanny. The all of a sudden, it imploded and reverted back to a larva. Robin decided to allow Silkie to stay with the Titans on the condition Starfire no longer fed it alien food. Silkie can usually be found in one of four places: Starfire's room, Robin's room, the T-Ship hangar, or the kitchen. Killer Moth later recreated an army of moths to help the Brotherhood of Evil capture Starfire. Ultimately, the failed and Starfire secretly gathered allies for the final battle.
