William Wintergreen was born and raised in Oxford, England. As an adult, he enrolled in Oxford University and pursued the research field instead of sports. Due to Wintergreen's father's title, he was free to roam about Oxford University's library. Eventually, he was employed by MI-5 and the British Army. During this time, he met Slade Wilson and the two became friends. They also saved each other's lives on missions. When Wilson was discharged for saving Wintergreen's life, Wintergreen decided to repay the debt by acting as his assistant. Over time, it appears he stopped acting as a moral conscience and was delegated to servitude.
Wintergreen was recruited, years after Slade's death, to join the Brotherhood of Evil. It is unconfirmed if he joined to get revenge on the Teen Titans, was an inside agent for Slade, or both. It is also speculated that Wintergreen triggered a chemical reagent located on a Slade mask confiscated by the Teen Titans. On the day of their planned attack, Wintergreen was present at the Brotherhood's Parisian base and was cryogenically frozen by Mas y Menos.
