Centuries ago, a group of pacifist humans sought refuge in an interdimensional sanctuary called Azarath. In hopes of living out their lives in the peace, they purged their bodies of negative energy and banished it past the Great Door into the netherworld. Over several years, the energy formed into one being. Then an endangered alien race summoned the being and it impregnated one of the women. Trigon was born nine months later. In less than a year, he killed the aliens and conquered the planet. At age six, Trigon traveled the galaxy and conquered every planet 23 years later. Trigon's reign of terror is well known as far as the Vega Star System on planet Tamaran.

Trigon hoped to sire an heir but they always turned on him or killed by their mothers. Eventually, the Order of Azarath imprisoned Trigon in another dimension. In modern times, on Earth, a cult attempted to summon Satan but Trigon used what power he could and impregnated one of the cultists, Angela Roth. Roth then moved to Azarath and gave birth to a daughter, Raven. She alone would become the portal to which Trigon would use to arrive on Earth on conquer it. The people of Azarath looked into Raven's future and confirmed her destiny. Despite this, they helped raise her with love and compassion. Meanwhile, another cult on Earth worshipped Trigon and prepared for his coming. They used the name "Scath" to protect his true identity and constructed a chamber to facilitate his arrival.

As Slade died in a pit of molten lava, Trigon spared him and offered him life again if he temporarily served him and delivered a series of messages. Slade agreed and was tasked with manipulating Raven into accepting her role. First, Slade applied several inscriptions onto Raven, then revealed the compound the cult built for Trigon. Finally, when the planets were properly aligned, Slade retrieved Raven for the ceremony. Trigon, however, concluded she came on her own will and stripped Slade of his powers. Luckily, Slade was wearing a Ring of Azar, an object that had limited resistance to Trigon's magic. As Trigon manifested on Earth, Jump City was ravaged, people were turned to stone, and Raven was lost.

The rest of the Teen Titans refused to give up and tried to find Raven as Trigon recovered from his summoning. Amused by their efforts, Trigon created three evil versions of Cyborg, Beast Boy, and Starfire from their souls. He was aware that their plan hinged on Raven and concluded they posed no threat, only sport. Robin returned to Jump City with Raven, reduced to a child. Undaunted, the Titans fought Trigon. Slade also returned with new life and attacked him, as well. Inspired by their efforts, Raven reverted to normal and banished Trigon again to another dimension. The world was saved and returned to normal.
