Otto Von Furth was employed as a miner and was excavating radium when he was trapped in a cave-in. Over the seven days Von Furth was stuck, he was exposed to the radioactivity of the minerals but survived, unlike his co-workers. While recovering at a Jump City hospital, he mutated into a monstrosity known as Plasmus and went on a rampage. The authorities discovered that if Von Furth was kept asleep, he would remain human and Plasmus would be inert. A special holding cell was built at the local prison complex and Von Furth was transferred to cellblock nine as Prisoner #3901.

Some time later, Cinderblock broke into prison and stole the sleeping Von Furth after evading the Teen Titans. Upon being awakened at Slade's order, Plasmus was let loose on Jump City and began feeding on waste at a processing facility. The Teen Titans, sans Cyborg, defeated Plasmus and Von Furth was taken into custody again. Months later, Plasmus resurfaced at a football game and ripped up underground sewer pipes to feed. Mid-battle, Starfire fled because of her current transformation phase. Once Plasmus was neutralized, the Titans left Earth in pursuit of Starfire.

Slade later sent Terra to break into cellblock nine and freed Plasmus, Cinderblock, and Overload. The trio were implanted with neural remotes and put under Slade's control. They were then merged into one being named Ternion and fought the Titans with combined super powers. It was defeated and separated back into the three villains after Slade's plan failed. After his apparent resurrection, Slade prepared the way for Trigon the Terrible's arrival on Earth. On the day of the proper celestial alignment, Plasmus broke out of prison and attacked tankers in the street. Eager to make this day the most cherished for the Titans, Raven made short work of Plasmus and mollified Von Furth.

A year later, Plasmus was recruited to join the Brotherhood of Evil. Months later, he was dispatched to Sector 7, the Pacific Ocean, with Trident to capture Aqualad. They arrived at the Brotherhood's Paris base to watch several super heroes be frozen by Professor Chang. However, the tide turned when the Teen Titans mounted a final battle and won. Plasmus and the rest of the Brotherhood were in turn cryogenically frozen.
