Origins unknown, Johnny Rancid debuted in Jump City and spread his message of terror and darkness aboard his sleek motorcycle. Robin pursued him alone in his R-Cycle. However, Robin was injured in the chase. The case took a strange turn when Rancid absorbed Larry's magical powers and attempted to use the energy to rule Jump City. Larry took his powers back and defeated him with the Titans. Months later, he returned with a giant robot dog named Rex and terrorized the citizens of Jump City again. The Titans blew up Rex but Rancid evaded capture. He soon returned with a new pet. Both were swallowed by Silkie, one of Killer Moth's lab creations. After Silkie imploded and reverted to its original form, Rancid was fished out of the remains and taken to prison.
Soon after, Rancid was recruited to the Brotherhood of Evil. He continued to run his own schemes and participated in a mad chase for a suitcase stolen from Robin. However, Red X expressed his unpredictability and sabotaged all of the villains' vehicles. Soon after, Rancid participated in the Brotherhood's strike against the Titans. He was sent to Sector 27 with Cinderblock to capture Mas y Menos. Rancid then displayed he retained a limited ability to transform into a more powerful state, while at high speeds, and captured only one of the brothers. He returned to the Paris base and fought in what became the final showdown between the two groups. At the conclusion, Rancid was one of many villains cryogenically frozen.
