10 years before his death, a French scientist known as The Brain began experimenting on African gorillas. He finally acquired a subject who was visibly more agile and stronger than the other specimens. The Brain used a series of teaching methods, including shock treatment, to raise the gorilla's I.Q. to 178. The gorilla then learned how to speak several languages, including English and French, and took the name Monsieur Mallah.

When The Brain died, Mallah followed written instructions and removed the scientist's brain from his body and placed it into a special receptacle that was connected to a computer network. He became intellect and evil personified. Together, The Brain and Monsieur Mallah tried to take over the world and later formed the Brotherhood of Evil. He soon became locked in a never ending battle against Mento and the Doom Patrol.

Years ago, the Brain and Mallah created a Quantum Generator, a device capable of generating black holes anywhere in the world. The Doom Patrol arrived and stopped them. The Brain retreated to the Amazon to collect raw materials to recreate a power source from scratch. Undiscovered for years, the Brain and Mallah made a second generator and power source. They even captured the Patrol and was about to activate the doomsday device when the Teen Titans arrived and turned the generator onto the compound.

After regrouping at a secret base under Paris, the Brain turned his attention to the next generation of super heroes and planned a long and protracted strategy to destroy them all. He recruited almost every known super villain to join the Brotherhood and acquired a Titans Communicator. After months, when all of the world's heroes were separated from each other, he launched a plan to capture everyone at the same time when they were at their weakest. After capturing most of them, the Brain was too arrogant and claimed victory. Several Titans escaped capture and infiltrated the Brotherhood base for a final showdown. When the tide turned against the Brain, he activated a fusion device to kill everyone, hero and villain alike, as he and Mallah escaped. However, Herald teleported it into space and Robin secured the Brain. He was frozen along with the rest of the Brotherhood.
