President Richard Nixon unilaterally took the United States of America off the gold standard, a monetary system in which paper money gets value directly related to gold, and moved to a floating exchange rate in 1971. In the present, leprechaun Beast Boy punched out Nixon during his explanation of the gold standard. In an episode of the classic Teen Titans animated series, Fidel Castro posed as Nixon in a costume and caused a hotel caper then retreated to President Nixon's Impenetrable Presidential Jungle Fortress. The Teen Titans closed in on the fortress and confronted Nixon. Castro continued to stoke the fires as Nixon and declared he was king of America and could do whatever he wanted. He rained a cage down on the Titans. Since it was made with American steel, the Titans could not break out. Nixon mocked them it was their tax dollars at work. Raven summoned the ghost of John F. Kennedy and fought Nixon while exchanging terrible political puns. Kennedy prevailed and decked Nixon on his back. The Titans were freed and Nixon was unmasked as Castro. Castro vowed he would have gotten away with it if not for the integrity of the American justice system. They all laughed.
