In Robin's version of the Teen Titans' origin story, he went to Upper Lamumba in Africa second to recruit Beast Boy after he researched stories of vigilante attacks on poachers. Beast Boy took the form of a rhino and chased away a group of poachers targeting elephants. Robin saved Beast Boy from being shot himself. Beast Boy asked if there were any women on the team and made it known he liked a 50:50 split.
