The Ice Beam is the life's work of Mr. Freeze, designed to emit a beam into the sky and summon him a Snowflake Army. He demonstrated it at the Cold Academy. For being the star pupil, Captain Cold was given the honor of activating the Ice Beam. Icicle pranked Cold and told him to look out for a polar bear. Cold thought he was just talking about the statue of Fluffy, the Cold Academy's first Director General. While everyone was distracted, Icicle switch the signs for the activation and self-destruction levers. Icicle lied he was just making sure Cold remembered the school history. Cold pulled the lever for self-destruction by mistake. Icicle stepped into protect Freeze and encased him in a block of ice. Freeze was grateful and promoted Icicle to the rank of captain but busted Cold down to private. Some time later, Freeze completed a new and improved version and unveiled it just as new students Ice Box and Frosty Tips were revealed to be Cyborg and Beast Boy. The beam worked and an adorable Snowflake Army descended upon Cold Academy.
