The Bug Beam is a weapon invented by Killer Moth. It is designed to mutate DNA of organic life forms and twist it to turn the victim into an insect-like humanoid. Moth planned to use the beam to transform everyone on Earth into a disfigured being like himself and a bug named Chuck in order to eliminate the impossibly high standards of beauty and teach the Teen Titans a lesson that looks don't matter. He faked an emergency distress call and lured the Titans to his hideout then blasted them with the beam. Moth realized they never learn and gave up on his plan. As he went off to bed, he refused to give them an antidote.
After the T-Jet crashed into Killer Moth's Cocoon, Kitten was smitten with Howdy. He eventually caved in and let her keep him but offered to mutate it with his Bug Beam so it could have two heads. Kitten liked that because he would be twice as cute and strapped Howdy down. Sticky Joe was horrified and jumped to the top of the Bug Beam, reversed the polarity, and reverted Howdy to normal. The Bug Beam accidentally tilted and fired on Killer Moth turning his face super handsome. Moth was horrified by his appearance.
