During the Tenth Age of Magic, Mister Tawky Tawny was given the power of shape shifting and was classified as an Ifrit, a supernatural creature just below an angel. No matter what form he takes, Tawny still retains his green eyes. Since then, he has been a benevolent force among mankind so much so that Tawny was referenced in various cultures' mythology such as the Celtic's Puca. Sometime later, Tawny became a close associate to the wizard Shazam and given partial access to his magic. After Teth-Adam was corrupted with power, Shazam and Tawny banished him into space. 5000 years later, Shazam chose a new champion and marked him, young Billy Batson of Fawcett City. Tawny disguised himself as a homeless man in order to watch over and make his own assessment of the boy.
On one fateful morning, Tawny was hassled by a trio of street punks. Batson tried to break it up and was beaten for his efforts. Tawny apologized to Batson and tested him one last time, by asking for money. Batson only had a subway token but gave it anyway. Minutes later, Tawny grabbed Batson downtown and gave him a subway token as Black Adam gave chase. The token's magic teleported Batson into a subway car and took him to a cavern where he met Shazam. At the finale of the battle between Captain Marvel, Superman, and Black Adam, Tawny appeared once more and revealed his true form as a tiger. He vowed to banish Adam so far, it'd take him 10,000 years to get back to Earth. Horrified by this prospect, Adam spoke the word, "Shazam" and aged rapidly, turning to ash.
