In 1635, a Norwegian mercenary founded Gotham City. It was later taken over by the British. During the American Revolutionary War, it was the site of many battles. During the later Civil War era, it was a sanctuary for runaway slaves. Gotham also became infamous for the occult.

In the 20th century, Gotham's architecture became exaggerated with Art Deco and Nouveau styles. It quickly became a dark and foreboding place, notorious for corruption and all forms of urban decay. This came about as it rapidly developed into a crucial economic bloodline for the United States. Finance, Manufacturing and Shipping are three major businesses present. Its most famous corporation is Wayne Enterprises, which specializes in industry and technological research and development. Gotham is famous for being home to the richest man alive, Bruce Wayne, and the city's resident protector, Batman who both technically live outside of the city. Although Batman's dedication is tolerated by the police department, his level of support is precarious.

In recent times, Lex Luthor announced his desire to work with Superman to destroy the coming Kryptonite meteor. Both Superman and Batman knew this was a trap. Eager to expose Luthor, Superman went along with the offer and met with Luthor in the outskirts of Gotham City. The meeting quickly became a battle between Superman and Metallo that spilled onto a nearby graveyard. Batman later appeared and extracted Superman. As they continued to the Batcave, Metallo was killed by Major Force. Some time later, when Gotham Talk Radio was doing their headline news segment with Vicki Vale, a Kryptonite meteor shard containing Kara Zor-El and her ship landed in Gotham Harbor. Scared citizens called the hotline at 555-7630 and reported the event. Batman arrived to investigate but Zor-El hijacked the Batboat and wandered into the city. One of the automated surveillance blimps, not even a week old, was heavily damaged by Supergirl. Superman secured it and threw it into the Gotham Harbor.
