In the 20th century, Superman created a secret headquarters in the Arctic amid an isolated mountain range. To ensure no one could enter, the key to the Fortress required enhanced strength to carry it for miles, then lift it to the doorway, and use it. Superman later cloaked the key with a hologram. Very few of his allies and friends know the Fortress' location, including Lois Lane, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

The main lobby houses a giant memorial statue of Superman's parents, Jor-El and Lara, holding the planet Krypton. Much like the Batcave, several rooms are dedicated to souvenirs that Superman collected over his career. An armory houses weapons he confiscated on alien planets. The Batman room holds items he collected while on missions with Batman. It also houses a statue of Batman and is kept locked. Likewise, there is a room dedicated to Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane. The Trophy Room contains various awards and trophies that Superman was honored with. A Clark Kent room acts as a red herring to deter intruders from discovering Superman's identity.

Of more practical use, Superman has a hangar bay for his Supermobile, a crime lab with state of the art forensics technology, and a monitoring station. In his spare time, Superman was known to experiment on samples of Kryptonite to find a way to erase its effects. He also maintains a zoo of alien species that he encountered over the years. They are mainly endangered species whose planet was destroyed and Superman feels a kinship to. The shrunken city of Kandor resides in the Fortress, as well.

After Batman and Superman learned a mysterious woman was Kara Zor-El, Superman's biological cousin, she was quarantined in the Fortress of Solitude and her ship was also taken there for study. In the meantime, Zor-El studied everything about Earth and mastered the English language. However, she and Krypto didn't bond very well.
