Hellspores are devices used by Darkseid on his planetary conquests. It is said that one Hellspore is able to blow a hole down a planet's core leaving a firepit, like those on Apokolips. Darkseid keeps an armory filled with 500 of them, encrypted to prevent misuse. Batman later used Big Barda's Mother Box to reprogram the arming code to any myriad of possible letters and numbers. He then threatened Darkseid with the implication of all 500 going off on Apokolips if he didn't foreswear Kara Zor-El. Darkseid was impressed by Batman's ruthlessness and agreed to the terms. The Hellspores were disarmed and Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Big Barda returned to Earth with Zor-El.
