Eve Eden was the daughter of the Queen of the Land of Nightshades, an interdimensional plane of existence. The Queen fled with her son and daughter to Earth to escape an enemy called the Incubus. Eden believed to be a normal child until Queen Maureen took her to the Land of the Nightshades. The Incubus struck and killed the Queen. Eden escaped but without her brother, Larry. As Nightshade, she vowed to rescue him. Some time later, she was recruited to join the government run Suicide Squad. Her shadow-based powers would be invaluable in the area of infiltration and escape.
After a $1 billion bounty was issued on Superman, several super villains banded together to hunt him. Gorilla Grodd used his telepathy to control the minds of several villains and even Nightshade. Rather than fight Nightshade, Batman and Superman rendered Grodd unconscious. Nightshade reverted to normal, but taking nothing for granted, Batman released knockout gas on her.
