During the 19th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, Prine Khufu accompanied the Wizard Nabu and the land's hero, Teth Adam into the desert. Nabu's prophecy came true and they discovered a Thanagarian ship. A female within the ship utters her last words as Nabu casts a spell of translation about Nth Metal.

At Khufu's orders, Teth-Adam carried the ship back to the Temple of Horus where Khufu studied it with keen interest. The Nth metal is crafted into a scarab, a knife, and a gauntlet. He then discovers the metal has the ability to negate gravity and allow him to fly. The evil priest Hath-Set then murdered Khufu and his lover, Chay-Ara with the Nth metal knife. Together, their souls were bound to Earth and could never move on.

Khufu was reincarnated as Brian Kent in 5th century England, Koenrad Von Grimm in 14th century Germany, Captain John Smith in 16th century Virginia, Hannibal Hawkes in the Old West, and Detective James Wright in the early 20th century. The soul of Khufu then reappeared as Carter Hall, a renowned archaeologist. While on a dig in Egypt, Hall regained the memories of Khufu and took on Horus' hawk motif as a superhero named Hawkman.

Hawkman would eventually encounter his reincarnated lover as Shiera Saunders. Saunders would become Hawkgirl and they would marry. Both have served on both the Justice Society of America and the Justice League of America. When President Luthor declared Superman and Batman as enemies of the state, Hawkman attempted to help capture them. However, he was defeated and Batman impersonated him with his outfit to infiltrate a nearby government outpost.
