Big Barda is the child of Apokolips' Big Breeda. As an infant Barda was taken by Darkseid. Raised in the Gestatron labs, Barda was later taken to one of many orphanages headed by Granny Goodness. Barda was one of the few who remained defiant after being beaten. Goodness took Barda under her tutelage and soon excelled in her training. Barda was then selected to an elite battalion known as the Female Furies whom she served as captain and trained team mates. It was during this time that Barda met another one of Granny Goodness' charges, Scott Free. The two fell in love and fled Apokolips and later married.
Barda and Free spend their time on Earth with Free's friend Oberon and on New Genesis among the New Gods, enemies of Apokolips. While on Earth, Scott Free engages in death defying stunts. Big Barda admired the Earth hero Wonder Woman for her ability to inspire hope. Barda eventually settled in a Connecticut suburb and lived a nice, quiet, and boring life. She was visited by Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman. After being apprised of Kara Zor-El's kidnapping, she declared she was going, too, as the trio had no idea what they were fighting against.
After constructing a multi-pronged plan, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Big Barda boomed to Apokolips in search of Kara Zor-El. Big Barda and Wonder Woman confronted the Female Furies to take up their attention. In battle, Barda killed Stompa but was beaten and used as a bargaining chip against Wonder Woman. They regrouped and defeated the Furies and Granny Goodness. Big Barda later appeared on Themyscira to usher in the official debut of Supergirl.
